Having sedation for dental procedures

It is common for many patients to feel nervous or anxious about their dental treatment. Although local anesthetics allow us to complete treatment without patients feeling discomfort, many patients prefer being more relaxed and sometimes unware of their therapy. We are pleased to be able to provide our patients with oral and iv sedation to help in this matter. Any dental procedure, including extractions, oral surgery, fillings, crowns, and root canals can be accomplished while being sedated. In fact, many patients prefer being sedated and having more of their dentistry done in one appointment than could be accomplished with just local anesthesia.

Types of sedation

We have a variety of methods to help with patients' anxieties. Most patients are familiar with Nitrous Oxide ("laughing gas"). Patients often claim this "takes the edge off" their anxiety. It is a mild inhalation sedative that may be all that is necessary. Patients can drive home immediately following nitrous oxide sedation. For certain patients and procedures, additional medications and methods may be necessary, such as Oral and IV Sedation.

With Oral Sedation, medication is given by pill the night before and/or 1 hour before the procedure. Patients are awake, but extremly relaxed. Many times later the patient will have little or no memory of the procedure.

IV Sedation, is however the"gold standard" for anesthesia. Oral sedation may take 40 minutes or more to be effective and is somewhat less predictable. IV sedation is more effective in sedating patients quickly and safely. With both oral and iv sedation, patients must be accompanied by an adult who will drive them home and care for them after the procedure. During both sedations, our patients' vital signs are monitored, similar to outpatient procedures in a hospital.
